Hybrid Courses

"Hybrid" and “web-enhanced” are terms used to describe courses that combine face-to-face classroom instruction with online (i.e., Internet-based) and other computer-based learning. In a hybrid course, part of the learning is online and as a result, the amount of time in a traditional classroom setting is reduced. This allows the student some flexibility, while maintaining the face-to-face contact with the instructor that is typical of traditional education. In a web-enhanced course, some of the classroom activities and assignments are done online, but the traditional classroom schedule is maintained.

The goal of both hybrid and web-enhanced courses is to combine the best features of in-class teaching with the best features of online learning to promote active independent learning. Using computer-based technologies, instructors redesign some lecture or lab content into new online learning activities, such as threaded discussions, case studies, tutorials, self-testing exercises, simulations, online group collaborations, and online testing.

Are hybrid courses for me?
While most students agree that the online portion of their hybrid course is more convenient, they also say that online learning requires more time, dedication, and time-management skills than more traditional classroom learning. Hybrid courses may not be ideal for everyone.

Who can take a hybrid course at MCC?
Anyone who has been admitted to MCC and has met the individual prerequisites for that particular class can enroll in a hybrid course.

Are there any prerequisites for hybrid courses?
There may be subject specific prerequisites. You can either check the schedule of classes or contact the instructor to get more information. Although course expectations may differ, you are generally expected to have good reading, writing and computer skills. You will also need to have good organizational and time-management skills to be successful as a hybrid student.

Are there any requirements for a hybrid course?
To participate in hybrid courses, you must have access to the Internet. Internet access is available at MCC’s Fort Morgan campus as well as all of MCC’s centers. If you are not on campus, public libraries, many workplaces and private Internet Service Providers (ISP) can help you get connected to the web.

I am not very proficient in the use of computers, so can I still enroll?
You should be familiar with how to access at least some basic information via the web. If you have any questions about your preparedness, you can contact the instructor for more information. In addition to providing you with academic support, your instructor can guide you on how to use the various online technologies. Your instructor can also provide you with information on help and additional support on campus.

Will I be working on my own?
You will be working closely with the instructor and the students in your class, just as you would in a traditional classroom. You will also learn to work online, both independently and with others, as you interact in a “virtual classroom” using skills such as online discussions or collaborations through group work.

Will hybrid course credits apply towards my degree/certification just like a traditional course?
Yes, hybrid course credits can be applied as credit towards your degree/certification just as a traditional course. Your transcripts will not reflect any differences for taking the hybrid courses, but you will gain computer literacy skills that will be valuable in other coursework and in your workplace.

How should I prepare to succeed in a hybrid course?
To succeed in a hybrid course you must be comfortable using computers and learning new software. It will be hard to keep up if you are not reasonably skilled at using a web browser and email communication. You must have time and access to the web several times a week; you must keep up with the class readings; you must stay current with the class calendar to meet assignment deadlines; you must read assignments and directions carefully; and most importantly you must be self-motivated to succeed in a hybrid course.
