This tax season, Morgan Community College (MCC) is partnering with the Denver-based Piton PHOTO: In 2013, MCC’s IRS-trained students filed 531 returns, helping local tax payers claim $969,860.00 in refunds. Pictured is Tax Help volunteer April Simmons.Foundation to help hard-working families become more financially secure by providing free tax preparation assistance through the Tax Help Colorado program. Beginning Saturday, January 25, IRS-certified MCC students will prepare and e-file tax returns free of charge for individuals with household incomes of less than about $50,000 a year.

Tax Help Colorado has a presence on 18 college campuses and operates 27 free tax sites statewide. More than 30% of Colorado families are eligible to participate in the program, which was created to help alleviate the financial burden of tax preparation on families that are striving to achieve financial stability.

Many of these families are also eligible for valuable tax benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit, and the preparers at MCC sites specialize in ensuring that taxpayers receive the refunds they deserve. One of the nation’s most successful anti-poverty tools, the EITC helps struggling families make ends meet. In 2013, Tax Help Colorado helped nearly 10,000 taxpayers receive more than $18.5 million in tax refunds, including nearly 6.8 million from the Earned Income Tax Credit. In addition, the program saved lower-income taxpayers nearly $2 million in commercial tax preparation fees.

This free service, which is quick and confidential, will be offered at Morgan Community College from January 25 through March 8 at the Fort Morgan campus, 920 Barlow Road, in Cottonwood Hall room 102. Tax services will be offered on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m.

In addition to the sessions at the Fort Morgan campus, there will be a one-day sessions at the MCC Burlington Center, located at 340 S. 14th Street in Burlington, on Saturday, February 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and at MCC Wray Center, located at 32415 Highway 34 in Wray, on Saturday, February 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
