The Colorado Commission on Higher Education recently released its annual remediation report. Results indicate that Morgan Community College (MCC) maintained one of the highest retention rates for students who take remedial courses at two-year institutions, and more than 75 percent of those students successfully complete the course. The report is based on data from last spring's high school graduates, which also indicates that more high school graduates are less prepared for college—testing below college level—than the graduating class the year before. According to Colorado's Lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia, while college remediation rates rose in 2010-11, there was an increase in retention rates for students enrolled in remedial classes. Garcia further noted that "more older students, more students of color [are] enrolling in college. [It's] a good thing, but they need more help to be successful." When asked what MCC is doing differently, Dr. Kerry Hart college president simply states, "It's because of our excellent faculty and staff. It takes everyone working toward the common goal of helping students be successful." An online copy of this year's remediation report can be found at http://www.ednewscolorado.org/ |
