WELCOME!

August 2005

Dear Psychology 101 Student:

Welcome to PSY 101 – General Psychology I

In this course you will learn a great deal about the study of psychology with an emphasis on the fascinating world of the brain and neuroscience. The other areas, equally interesting, are memory, stress and health, consciousness, motivation and emotion, and perception and sensation. You will find the information VERY relevant to your life, and I am sure you will find much of it helpful AND interesting.

This Guided Study is designed to allow us time to communicate with each other and we will be doing this using WebCT course software over the Internet for email correspondence with your instructor, for online discussion activities, and for online quizzes. There are several handouts available on MCC's Guided Study Resource Page under Step 6 describing WebCT, how to log in to WebCT, and how to use WebCT. Be sure to look over these handouts! If you have questions about how to use WebCT, or if you are experiencing technical problems, please contact:  Don Estes, Telelearning Coordinator, at Morgan Community College (see Course Syllabus for contact information).

DO read the accompanying information VERY, VERY carefully. It should answer many questions you have about this course. Reading IS a requirement for this course, and you MUST take the time to go through the course information with your book and study guide beside you. In fact your Study Guide IS your guide through the course.

Many students are confused about the videotapes accompanying this course. You may record them off of PBS or MCC-TV, or you may rent them from ACT/RMI Inc. You will find how to do this in the accompanying information in this packet. I am suggesting you consider recording ALL of the programs, even though you will use only about half of these this semester.

You will notice that there is a requirement to check in with me the first week of the course, and I am hoping you will provide me with information about yourself. Here’s a little about me:

I am in my 3rd year of teaching at Morgan Community College.  Most of my classroom experience has been through the Burlington Center, but look forward to working with the students from throughout MCC.  Outside of Morgan Community College, I am in my sixth year as a school social worker for East Central BOCES, where I do social/emotional assessments for all students and counseling for some students in Special Education for ten districts.  In addition, I assist parents and teachers in how to work with children with learning disabilities especially social/emotional concerns.  Also, I assist in running groups for a local treatment center.  I obtained my Master of Social Work degree from the University of Kansas and my Bachelor of Social Work came from Fort Hays State University.   I welcome your comments, questions and concerns.

Sincerely,  Hal McNerney (Instructor)
