WELCOME!

Human Nutrition—HWE 1003A1

August 2005

Dear Human Nutrition Student,

Welcome to Human Nutrition Guided Study course. This course is designed to introduce you to the basic principles of nutrition with emphasis on personal nutrition. This course will enhance your knowledge regarding the role of food and nutrition and an application of therapeutic diets. You will have the opportunity to analyze your dietary habits and identify dietary deficiencies/excesses.

You have chosen to take HWE 1003A1 as a Guided Study course. The Guided Study format gives you maximum freedom and flexibility. There are no class meetings to attend; you do all the work at the time that is convenient for you. With the freedom comes responsibility; the people who succeed in Guided Study courses are those with self-discipline.

Do read the attached information VERY carefully. The information provided should answer many questions you have about this course. Reading is a requirement for this course as well as access to the Internet & email.  Take time to read the Syllabus carefully.

The first step, after reading the syllabus and reading the other materials on this course site, is to make direct contact with the instructor. I am asking you to read, sign and return the Student Contract to me by August 29th.  I am also requesting that you  contact me by email within the first week of the course. I would like to learn a little about who you are and your education goal. Here is a little information about me:

I am in my 5th year of teaching for Morgan Community College at the Burlington Center. I retired in 2001 and now I am keeping busy through various job opportunities. Some years ago, I earned a BS in Home Economics Education.  My graduate work was done at CSU and I have continued classes through MCC and NJC. I was employed by both Kansas & Colorado as an Extension Home Economist. I have also been employed as a Dietary Consultant, Director for a HUD Housing Authority, and Director for Kit Carson and Lincoln County Department of Social Services. I am a single parent of two grown daughters, both married and I have 2 grandchildren.  I am happy to have your comments, questions and concerns.

Good luck as you begin this course,

Norma Pankratz, Instructor
