Philosophy 112 - Ethics
Guided Study course

Greetings Students:

Welcome! I hope that you have had an enjoyable summer, and that your brain is relaxed and ready for some serious thinking! I commend you for taking this course by guided study because of the amount of self-discipline needed to complete such a course on your own.  In the semester ahead, I challenge you to tackle some of the major ethical questions our society is facing today. Be courageous, be honest, and be open-minded, as few ethical issues are simple and there is rarely a "right" or "wrong" answer.

I am Brad Patterson, your Ethics facilitator and instructor. I am a lifelong resident of Colorado, having grown up in Fort Collins and now living in New Raymer. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Colorado State University and my Executive Master of Business Administration degree from C.S.U. - Denver, of which Ethics was one of my favorite courses. I have worked primarily in the field of transportation management, focusing on public and paratransit, traffic information, in-car navigation systems mapping, and intelligent transportation systems. I have been called a "Renaissance man", as I have enjoyed a very wide range of career and personal experiences. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, I can become acquainted with each of you.

Ethics affects all of us. We each have a personal ethical system, which, collectively, equals our national ethical system.  Have you been shocked at corporate greed? Do you wonder what is happening to our nation’s morality? Do you think Martha Stewart deserved what she got? Each of us has a part to play in what is happening.  In this course, I urge you to express yourself freely on such issues as business ethics, medical ethics, and host of other issues.

The syllabus is your roadmap to Philosophy 112 - Ethics.  Please review it carefully or you're bound to get lost! My contact information and each week's reading and project assignments, course activities and requirements are thoroughly detailed. The workload should be fairly evenly paced throughout the semester, and there is little room for procrastination!

I look forward to reading your thoughts and research on these matters of ethics, and the informed dialogue we will share. You have my promise that I will do my very best to help you succeed in this course. Please do not hesitate to contact me with your questions and ideas!

Good luck!

Brad Patterson
