1.

Visit with the ADA Coordinator.

  1. The ADA Coordinator will want to talk with the student about their disability. This discussion will be used to hear about the student’s understanding of their disability, the obstacles it presents for them, and what has and has not worked for them in the past. Students should be prepared to answer and discuss “How does your disability affect your ability to learn?”

  2. This visit should take place as soon as possible. Some accommodations may take up to several weeks to acquire. Delaying a visit to the ADA Coordinator may result in several weeks of waiting for accommodations, depending on the accommodation and scheduling issues.

  3. Students may be asked to provide some sort of paper documentation. Every student and situation is different. So, the paper documentation may be an IEP or 504 Plan from high school. It may be a note from a doctor, military documents, test results, or a psychological report. The student and their situation will determine if paper documentation is needed and/or what the college may need.

The ADA Coordinator will generate a Letter of Accommodation (LOA) for the student.

  1. The LOA is an agreement between the ADA Coordinator and the student on the accommodations for the student.

  2. The LOA is also the document that students use to get accommodations from their instructors.

  3. No information about the disability is included in the LOA, just the approved accommodations.

The student takes the LOA to their instructors.

(On the LOA, instructors are invited to make a copy.)

  1. Until the instructor receives the LOA, they will not provide the student with any accommodations. Students with disabilities will be expected to accomplish all work in the same manner as all the other students in the class, until the LOA is received.

  2. A student with a disability may decide to not share the LOA with any, or all, of their instructors until they want to. As soon as it is presented to the instructors, they are entitled to the accommodations indicated on the LOA.

  3. Accommodations for a disability are not retroactive. If a student does not share the LOA until mid-semester, they will not be allowed to apply those accommodations to assignments, quizzes, or exams that took place prior to the presentation of the LOA. No “retakes” will be allowed.

Students should come back to the ADA Coordinator every semester for a new LOA.

This provides the student with a disability an opportunity to share any pertinent information with the ADA Coordinator: How the accommodations were received by instructors, how the instructors followed through with granting the accommodations, how the accommodations worked for the student, what accommodations are not needed, and/or what accommodations should be utilized for the next semester.
