Fort Morgan, CO. 5/2/2023. Morgan Community College (MCC) partnered with Denver-based Mile-High United Way and Tax Help Colorado to offer individuals and families free tax preparation. The service provided a vital need in regional communities, easing the burden of tax preparation fees for lower to middle-income families and helping them connect with valuable tax credits. The program, offered February 2 through March 7, 2023, yielded over $840,000 in 2022 tax refunds for the participants.
MCC students who were enrolled in a related Tax Help Colorado course became Certified Tax Preparers (CTP) and joined other CTP volunteers to put their skills to use. The Tax Help Colorado course focused on IRS regulations, such as tax filing requirements, filing status, exemptions, tax deductions, and credits.
“The Tax Help Colorado program was an invaluable experience for students, volunteers, and our community,” stated Leah Thomas, MCC Ag Business Faculty and Program Coordinator. “The goal of MCC’s tax site was to educate individuals about a variety of tax scenarios that ultimately help put money back into our communities.”
The success of the MCC Tax Help Colorado program was made possible through the hard work of seventeen volunteers: Mohammed A. Abdusalam, Reine Dayouh, Lexi Ewertz, Beth Hocheder, Judy Keating, Janet Larrick, Anai Macast, Lily Martinez, Shawna-Della Maudlin, Betty McKie, Laurie Morris, Cathi Nix, Becca Olivere, Emily Patten, Perla Rodriguez, Rebecca Schmidt, and Connie Tormohlen. The team donated over 620 volunteer hours, processing 442 state and federal tax returns.
“I learned so much about the importance and accountability of the United States tax system,” stated Perla Rodriguez, MCC student. “The MCC Tax Help class really helped me understand what and how we contribute to our economy through taxes. I took this class to help me build my knowledge about our tax and accounting systems.”
