MCC Receives Approval for Bachelor of Applied Science in Elementary Education

MCC’s newest bachelor’s degree empowers future educators with an accessible, high‑quality pathway to meet Colorado’s growing need for licensed elementary teachers.

Morgan Community College (MCC) announces the launch of its newest undergraduate program, the Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Elementary Education with an Early Childhood emphasis. Designed to address Colorado’s critical teacher shortage and strengthen the educator pipeline in rural communities, the program received final approval from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) on January 16, 2026. The degree will officially launch in August 2026 for the Fall Semester.

Across Colorado, nearly 6,911 teacher vacancies remain unfilled, with rural districts facing the greatest challenges. MCC’s new Elementary Education BAS provides an accessible and practical pathway for working adults, paraprofessionals, and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) graduates to earn teacher licensure. Flexible delivery options, including remote, hybrid, and online formats, allow students to stay rooted in their communities while advancing their education.

“MCC is honored and excited to bring this program to our region,” said Jamie Hochanadel, MCC Education Faculty. “Our communities need teachers who understand the unique strengths and challenges of rural education. This program offers an affordable pathway into a meaningful career while preparing future educators through hands‑on learning and strong relationships with our school district partners.”

The 120‑credit completion program includes early fieldwork, integrated practicum experiences, and a year‑long clinical residency in local school districts. The curriculum aligns with Colorado Teacher Quality Standards, Elementary Education endorsement requirements, and evidence‑based practices such as the Science of Reading and early STEM foundations.

Developed in collaboration with regional districts, the program features support from mentor teachers, practicum placement sites, advisory partners, and hiring pathways for program graduates. Students will receive personalized academic advising, licensure preparation, tutoring, counseling services, and residency coaching throughout their educational journey.

“Congratulations to the dedicated team at MCC who developed this important program,” said Dr. Curt Freed, MCC President. “The new Elementary Education bachelor’s degree with an early childhood emphasis reflects MCC’s ongoing commitment to providing high‑quality, affordable educational opportunities while preparing students for essential roles in our schools.”

MCC continues to expand its academic offerings to meet workforce needs. The college launched its first bachelor’s program, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, in 2019. Building on that foundation, MCC broadened its pathways in fall 2024 with the Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Administration and Management and the Bachelor of Applied Science in Education with an endorsement in Technology Education.

Registration for fall classes begins on March 9, 2026.
