Morgan Community College (MCC) partnered with Denver-based Mile High United Way to offer individuals and families free tax preparation through the Tax Help Colorado program. The services, offered in Fort Morgan and Burlington, provided a vital need in regional communities, easing the burden of tax preparation fees for lower to middle-income families and helping them connect with valuable tax credits. Between February 3 and March 5, 2026, nearly 500 tax returns were prepared at the two locations, yielding over $1,000,000 in federal and state refunds.
“After five years of leading MCC’s tax site, I continue to be inspired by the educational opportunities it creates for volunteers, students, and community members alike. That’s what motivates me,” stated MCC Business Faculty, Leah Thomas. “In a country where financial literacy is often lacking, preparing taxes, and offering guidance allows us to make a real difference in our community. As the need for these services grows, we invite passionate individuals to join us as volunteers. Community volunteers help expand our reach and ensure that more families in our community receive the support and education through the tax preparation process.”
MCC students who were enrolled in a related Tax Help Colorado course became Certified Tax Preparers (CTP) and joined other CTP volunteers to put their skills to use. The Tax Help Colorado course focused on IRS regulations, such as tax filing requirements, filing status, exemptions, tax deductions, and credits.
“Coming back to volunteer after being a student has been incredibly rewarding, and it allows me to make a meaningful impact by supporting others through an important and sometimes stressful process like taxes, stated MCC student volunteer, Courtney McFarland.
The success of the MCC Tax Help Colorado program was made possible through the hard work of 18 volunteers: Deanna Curry, Emilida Langdon, David Richardson, Rahmo Ismail, Judy Keating, Cathie Nix, Betty McKie, Janet Larrick, Beth Hocheder, Connie Tormohlen, Rebecca Schmidt, Leah Thomas, Cindy Tormohlen, Linda Frasco, Lily Agurirre, Courtney McFarland and Laurie Morris.
Volunteers shared that it is inspiring to serve the community alongside such a dedicated team. Each year, the tax site team goes above and beyond, often working after hours, to complete tax returns for local families. Many volunteers have supported Tax Help Colorado for more than a decade, reflecting a deep commitment to the community. With continued support from Morgan Community College, the program remains a vital resource for rural communities.
